The Figaro Beneteau 3 is the first one-design single-deck underwater wing yacht in production. This embodiment of high technology and innovation comes from a collaboration between the Beneteau Group’s top experts and the Van Peteghem Lauriot-Prévost (VPLP) bureau, the designers of the last two Vendée Globe-winning yachts. The prototype has been tested and production of the boat has started. It is an ISO/World Sailing Category A design.
Unlike the Imoca 60 sails, the FB3 sails have an inward profile. Their working principle is different. They are versatile sails that reduce drift and improve the correct balancing of the boat without increasing motion, which in turn improves the performance of the boat.
Made of foam sandwich, fibreglass and polyester resin impregnated material, it meets modern designs and is ballast-free.
As with the Imoca 60, the mast is positioned at the rear to ensure balance when sailing. This allows the use of top sails and the addition of a bowsprit. Individual sailors use a square top headsail, genoa and foil, as well as a 105 m² spinnaker at the end of the mast for speed in light winds and a small gennaker.
